Obama himself, they’re making sure listeners know that Michelle is just as a big figure as he is being the First Lady. It’s an interesting idea, because even though they’re not referring to Mr. By referring to Michelle Obama, and even Oprah, they’re telling girls that we should believe in ourselves and have confidence because we have the ability to be whoever we want to be and be successful from it. Don’t want yo compliments, use common sense, I’m on my Michelle Obama shhh…” Chorus: “BOSS, Michelle Obama, purse so heavy, gettin’ Oprah dollars, BOSS!” Aside from having these really catchy lyrics and a beat that automatically makes you want to dance, they’re putting out a really big message from this song. There is a lyric that is included, mainly part of the chorus, where 5H refers to Michelle Obama: 2nd Verse: “C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-T, that’s me, I’m confident. This song, given it’s interesting title spelling, is what we’re going to be focusing on along with the theme of the female empowerment that they stand for. Earlier this summer, they dropped their single “BO$$,” which is a track that will be on their first studio album to be released in December of this year titled Reflection.
At the same time, they are also serving as role models for girls everywhere – each individual singer has had their share of struggles growing up and can familiarize themselves with the girls who listen to their music. As they are all transforming into womanhood while dealing with their fame, they feel as though the message of girl power needs to be spread. (Amen!) Being an all girl group, this is no surprise. They stress the idea that being with your true best friends is a lot more satisfying that constantly worrying about boys. “Me and My Girls” is a song about exactly what the title says – being happy and spending quality time with your best girl friends. “Miss Movin’ On” talks about how break ups or ending friendships is tragic but you can still end up “growing strong” from it. Specifically, “Miss Movin’ On” and “Me and My Girls” have come to been known as girl anthems and empowerment overall. Unlike many female artists that are recently on trend, Fifth Harmony (5H) send out nothing but positive messages in their music and through the lyrics. In late 2013, they released their EP titled Better Together where the lead single is called “Miss Movin’ On” and soon after, another single released called “Me and My Girls.” Because a majority of the girls are of Spanish descent, they created a Spanish version of their EP, as well as an acoustic version. They are just as genuinely gifted live as they come across through their recorded music and on television. They had a great push from Demi Lovato (who was a judge on the show during their season) when she asked them to be her opening act during her past 2013-2014 tour. I had the chance to watch them in concert earlier this year.
They come off as relatable and icons who young people can look up to. They drew in a great audience from the beginning because they are all between the ages of 17 to 21. Since their time on the show, they created a YouTube channel where they have posted numerous videos of song covers and other randoms for fans to indulge in. Normani, Ally, Camila, Lauren and Dinah Normani, Ally, Camila, Lauren and Dinah are five of the most talented singers I’ve come across.
